Today at 14:25 UTC seismic tremor was seen at seismic station faf on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Following this increase, tremor levels continued to increase and, at 16:40 UTC, a small volcanic eruption began just northwest of Litli-Hrutur on the Reykjanes Peninsula. From web-camera imagery, there are visible gas emissions and the beginning of a lava glow. There are no signs of major ash emissions. This is confirmed by radar observations and line-of-sight views. The colour-code for the Reykjanes with be reviewed again imminently.

Since 15th of September 2022, Fagradalsfjall volcanic system is identified as a separate system within the Reykjanes peninsula. Until now Fagradalsfjall was accounted as a part of the nearby Krýsuvík volcanic system, however the recent two eruptions (2021 and 2022), in addition to preceding geological studies, indicate the evidence of a distinct feature and the need to identify and refer to it as a separate entity.
Fagradalsfjall has been added to the Catalogue of Icelandic Volcanoes: https://icelandicvolcanoes.is//?volcano=FAG
