The eruption which commenced on the 19th of March in Geldingadalur is showing major changes in its activity since the 28th of June when the outpouring of lava stopped temporarily. At the same time the volcanic tremor decreased to very low levels and remained low until the following day. Tremor and lava extrusion started again to be vigorous on the 30th of June. The activity remained pretty stable over the past few days until this night (03.00 am). Currently the tremor is at very low level and the activity at the vent (as observed for cameras and visual inspections) is absent. Gas is still degassing from the main crater and high values of SO2 are still measured at the eruption site. Thermal detection from satellite images detected clear signs of activity last night when the crater was still active and abundant lava rivers were observed through the live cameras. The last aerial acquisition over the area was performed on the 26th of June and revealed an averaged steady flux at about 13 m3/s and a total erupted volume of about 80 million m3. The last DOAS traverse, performed on the 28th of June, showed a flux of SO2 between 50 and 85 kg/s. At this stage it is hard to anticipate how the activity will evolve as this might be a temporary halt in the eruption caused by changes in the feeding system/conduit. A scientific meeting will be held on Thursday next week and a new assessment will be done. IMO keeps monitoring the area carefully. Because of the lack of ash and the minor tephra emission in the atmosphere, the aviation color code for Fagradalsfjall-Krýsuvík is maintained ORANGE as there are no imminent hazard for the aviation, expect for an area with a radius of 650 m around the active vent due to potential lapilli and scoria fallout.

Gas is still present at the eruption site and today it is occasionally detected at stations in Hafnafjörður (North-east of the eruption site).
