The eruption which commenced on the 19th of March in Geldingadalur is still ongoing. Since its beginning it progressed and evolved with time. As of now only vent nr. 5 is still active and is erupting in a pulsating manner alternating between active lava fountaining reaching 500m a.s.l and no activity. The lava flows keep propagating in Geldingadalur and Meradalur valleys. Saturday evening it overflew the barriers (constructed last week) and is now flowing into Nátthagi valley and is slowly getting closer to important communication infrastructure. Due to bad weather conditions at the eruption site no new measurements have been provided this week, so no new effusion rate estimates are available. A DOAS traverse was performed yesterday and gave a flux of SO2 between 48 and 58 kg/s. All the activity is taking place in the area where, prior to the eruption, a magmatic intrusion was detected and mapped. In light of the recent developments, it cannot be excluded that more fractures will open along the same alignment. Because of the lack of ash and the minor tephra emission in the atmosphere, the aviation color code for Fagradalsfjall-Krýsuvík is maintained ORANGE as there are no imminent hazard for the aviation, expect for an area with a radius of 650 m around the active vent due to potential lapilli and scoria fallout. The seismic activity is further decreasing, over the past week nearly 90 earthquakes have been detected on the Reykjanes peninsula, compared to roughly 200 the previous week. One earthquake M3,4 was detected in the Brennisteinsfjöll area (at about 20 km East of the eruption site), others below M3,0. The activity spread over an area between the SW-ern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula to Brennisteinsfjöll.

Hæð gosmökkvar:
Due to low visibility in the area today, the plume is not detectable from web cameras.

Nánar um vá:
Due to strong SE-erly wind the volcanic cloud is quickly drifted towards Reykjanesbær and in the past few days high levels of SO2 have been detected in Njarðvík, Ásbrú and Vogar. Strong wind condition will persist for the next few days with direction from S and SSE.
