Virkniyfirlit:
On the 10th of April at around 3 am UTC an additional fissure opened in the area where the eruption is currently taking place. The new fissure was detected with cameras which are monitoring the area in real-time. The new fissure is roughly located between the two most recent fissures, and the exact coordinates are still not available. The new lava is flowing towards Geldingadalur valley. The volcanic plume is observed from the cameras and the height at 08:00 UTC is assessed to be between 1100-1300 m asl. Potential for new openings, lava flows and gas pollution are the main hazard in the area. No emission of ash is reported, if not occasionally and in minor amount.
The eruption is currently ongoing at four openings, all active at the same time. A strong thermal signal, as detected from satellite retrieval, confirms the intensity of the eruption is still very elevated. It cannot be excluded that more fractures will open in the coming days/weeks along the same line where the dike intrusion was mapped during the unrest phase.
