The seismic activity in the Reykjanes peninsula is still elevated. Yesterday (04.03.2021) four earthquakes with M4 were recorded, and about 40 had magnitude above M3. Since midnight, about 800 earthquakes have been detected by the seismic network, nine of them with magnitude between M3 and M4. Deformation data (both based on GPS and InSAR images as well as on direct observations) show evidences of magmatic intrusion taking place and still ongoing in the area of Fagradalsfjall mountain (coordinate for reference is 63.898, -22.272). In the last few days the seismicity has been migrating towards SW of Fagradaslfjall and occasional seismicity is detected again in the area of Þorbjörn mountain. No tremor has been detected since the evening of 03.03.2021, when the aviation color code has been changed to orange. Overall the area in between Krýsuvík and Reykjanes-Svartsengi volcanic systems is still showing a very elevated level of activity. However, in light of the current geophysical data an eruption is not considered imminent. IMO keeps monitoring closely the area and surveillance has been (and will be) potentiate in order to improve the capability of detecting signs of imminent eruption and follow any possible evolution.
