The seismic activity in the area between Krýsuvík and Reykjanes-Svartsengi volcanic systems is still elevated. More than 4000 earthquakes have been automatically detected in the area since the earthquake of M5.7 occurred on the 24th February. Of them, 72 had a magnitude above M3 and 15 were above M4, distributed over some 25 km on N-S striking faults along the E-W striking plate boundary. The cGPS data shows a co-seismic horizontal displacement of about 4 cm at the station closest to the epicenter of the M5.7 earthquake. The recent interferogram shows a large signature of a left-lateral movement over a large section of the plate boundary (~25 km segment - from Svartsengi to Kleifarvatn). A collection of geochemical data in the last two days reveal normal values in the gas types and concentration, except a temporal sharp increase in H2 detected in Svartsengi. The interpretation of this increase will be reviewed when the measurements will be repeated next week. In light of the ongoing volcano-tectonic unrest ongoing in the Reykjanes peninsula, given the current elevated seismic activity beyond normal background levels, given the large uncertainty on how the processes will evolve, the aviation color code is maintained yellow for Krýsuvík volcano. It will be reassessed next Monday if things will not escalate further during the weekend.

Hæð gosmökkvar:
No eruption ongoing.

Nánar um vá:
The current volcano-tectonic unrest has been intensifying in the past days over the entire peninsula. IMO does not exclude the possibility to review the aviation color code also for other volcanic systems which belong to this region.
